According to local legend, the forest grew from the pits of dates that were thrown here by Egyptian soldiers, Saracen pirates and King Mithridates\u2019s army. Vai\u00a0is one of the largest\u00a0attractions\u00a0of the\u00a0Mediterranean island\u00a0of Crete and the largest\u00a0natural palm forest\u00a0in Europe, made up of\u00a0palm tree Phoenix Theophrasti. The forest is located at the exit of a quite narrow valley and ends at the beach. Within the forest is a\u00a0spring\u00a0of good\u00a0sweet water\u00a0and a\u00a0small brook\u00a0with numerous\u00a0oleanders\u00a0within the riverbed. The forest is unique not only for its beauty but also for the\u00a0species of palm trees\u00a0it&#8217;s comprised of.
